I'm not the best person to comment on whether it is appropriative or not (I'm a different kind of South Asian) but it made me uncomfortable enough that I couldn't continue reading the story because my first association with the word (without a modifier) is the geographic region and the people who come from there.
I’m sorry for that. I’d hate to give anyone else that experience, so I’ll definitely change it.
