More Oracle-related ranting from Idgie.

idginator:

So what does DC get out of it? Well, recognition from a wider audience, one assumes. Barbara Gordon as Batgirl has been featured in three different mass-media projects, including Batman ‘66 and two different animated series.

Barbara Gordon as Oracle, however, only really has the Arkham Asylum video game and the short-lived Birds of Prey series to her credit. And that last one might actually count against her.

As for which one I’d go with if I had my way, it’s hard to say. I like both versions of the character an awful lot, and I really enjoy both aspects for what they represent. But I will say that in a line of comics that also features Dick Grayson as Nightwing, Jason Todd as the Red Hood and a completely unrelated red-haired Batwoman, Barbara Gordon still being Batgirl doesn’t really work.

Bolding mine. It’s that that is a huge fucking problem, and one I’ve spoken out against a couple of times. I understand that the writers or whomever can’t just snap their fingers and get whatever character they want, and that with the new shows, which are each reboots in their own lights, it makes sense to start over with Babs as she was in the beginning, which was Batgirl, but it is the lack of exposure that Oracle gets that is part of the problem, and for them to use that as an excuse is absolute bullshit.

The last paragraph I posted there, however, makes me feel better, because, really? Having Babs return to being BG when these other characters are allowed to stay in their advanced positions (Nightwing, Red Hood, and Kate being Batwoman, for examples as mentioned above), really doesn’t make sense.

There’s also the excuse Gail Simone mentioned, where they’re, supposedly, bringing everyone back (though, uh, if Dick and Jason are staying as Nightwing and Red Hood, theeennn… pwuh?), and that that is part of the reason for making Babs Batgirl again. Personally, I feel they could have EASILY reverted her back into a less experienced role (something Gail said they’re doing, making it so that the characters aren’t as knowledgeable and experienced as they currently are in the DCU), while still keeping her as Oracle.

And as for the “it doesn’t make sense with all the magical cures floating around in the DCU for her to stay paralyzed!”, perhaps Babs could actually want to stay as she is, to prove that, hey, fuck you guys! I don’t NEED to go back to that! (Pretty sure she’s said something along those lines, heeeyyyyy!)

I mean, call me stupid if you want, but I don’t think I’d accept a supposed “cure”. Why? Because I don’t need to be able to walk. Yes, my life is hard. Yes, this is due to my paralysis. But you know what? It’s the paralysis that has helped shape me into the woman I’ve become, and I am damned proud of who I am. This is why I hate going to a different church, or when guest preachers come to ours, because they always, always feel that they have to pray for me, that I have to get healed, have to want it. Hells, the last time this happened, the guest preacher called for people to come up to get prayed for, and when I didn’t, when I stayed where I was and bowed my head while he prayed for the others? When he was done, he came up to me and prayed over me anyway. He prayed for me to regain hope, to believe that I might walk one day.

Yeah, you know what? Fuck that. Fuck all of this that we need to be healed. I have no problem with people wanting to get better, especially those who have such debilitating conditions (mine is quite tame, something I’m well aware of), but I am sick and tired of everyone else, all these able-bodied people taking pity on us, and thinking that we have to be able to use all of our bodies to be successful, to fit it.

Screw you, world. We’re awesome, and we prove it, time and time again. Screw you for trying to take away some of the little representation we get in the media on how capable a differently-abled person can be.

Just. Fuck. You.

(I do like Chris Sims’ article there, as he highlights Babs’ strengths as Batgirl, and as Oracle, and even mentioned the sort of BS this does to Steph and Cass, and, just… <3)
